Why Hydrotherapy?
Supported movement, guided by evidence and tailored to the dog.
Underwater treadmill therapy uses buoyancy and water resistance to create a controlled exercise environment. For a suitable dog, it can provide a practical way to practise movement while the therapist adjusts water depth, speed and session duration to the individual plan.
Movement with support
Water supports part of the dog’s body weight while still allowing active stepping. Canine research shows that water depth changes limb-joint movement, which is why settings should be selected for the dog rather than applied as a standard recipe.
Mobility and range of motion
A 2025 pilot study of 50 clinically stable dogs found that ten underwater treadmill sessions were associated with modest improvements in measured joint flexion and extension. The result is encouraging, although larger controlled studies are still needed.
Structured rehabilitation
A 2026 matched cohort study following spinal surgery found earlier independent walking in dogs receiving structured underwater treadmill therapy. Hydrotherapy is best used as one part of an individual rehabilitation or wellness plan.
What this means for your dog: hydrotherapy may support mobility, gait practice, joint movement and conditioning when it is appropriate and well tolerated. It is not suitable for every dog and does not replace veterinary diagnosis or treatment.
